Past
The early people who walked our planet ate what was in their environment. It consisted of shoots, leaves, nuts, roots and seeds. It was a plant based diet. If it was not within walking distance then it was not a part of the daily diet. It had a balance of fiber, protein and carbohydrates.
When fire became a part of mans life, the diet changed. From those very early days mans life on the planet has taken some rather dramatic changes in a very short period of time. Our hunter gatherer stage has taken us to heights of growing crops like wheat, rice, legumes, a wonderful variety of vegetables and fruits plus animal farming such as cattle, sheep, pigs, fish and seafood.
When we look at past cultures they chose to eat what was grown locally. The plants, herbs, fruits and vegetables kept them in good health. They were very attuned to their daily work environment and had to produce a diet that would sustain them in all these tasks. This can be seen quite clearly with different cultures around the world.
The father of medicine both for orthodox and alternative practitioners said "Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food". Hippocrates made this grand statement in the 5th Century BC. He knew the food people should be eating when they became unwell. After all, food is the substance which keeps us alive.
